Pig Keeping Courses For All
“Our aim is to give people the confidence in handling pigs and to educate them in successful ways of keeping pigs.”
Where are we?We are based in Lowick in the beautiful Lake District at the Southern end of Coniston Water.
What do we do? We offer pig keeping courses for those keeping pigs and wishing to learn more and for those who are thinking of keeping pigs. We have a basic one day course and next year will be expanding these into specialist days and weekends.
What does a one day course cover? The basic one day course covers all aspects of pig husbandry. We will cover different housing systems, feeding and herd health. The legal requirements of keeping pigs. Handling and safety. Selecting pigs, breeding and finishing. The end product and marketing.
Who are the course providers? Carole Barr and John Sutcliffe, who are experienced pig keepers, keeping both traditional and modern breeds of pig. They both have registered herds and produce for the show ring, sell registered breeding stock and produce finished pigs for meat.
Where will be course be based? Around John’s farm at Lowick where there are pigs of various ages, at various stages of finishing and on both indoor and outdoor systems. As well as time on the farm we use the local village hall for discussion, catering facilities and toilets.
What if I have a particular interest or topic I would like to know about ? Or there is a group of us wanting to have a day looking at specific topics? Please ask us and we will advise whether we can cover it in the basic course or what opportunity there is to set up a special day for you.
What will I need to bring? Outdoor clothing a must, wellingtons essential and overalls a strong suggestion. A change of clothes if you wish. A packed lunch and yourself.
