Oaklands Pigs
50 adults, 12 breeds, 3 litters a month. For a truly comprehensive pig course visit Oaklands Pigs. There’s loads to see. Oaklands Pigs have been running courses now, for 4 years with 100′s of satisfied customers from both the UK and as far a field as Japan and New Zealand. We aim to share all the tips and hints that we have learnt over the last 15 years of pig keeping, to help the novice set up right first time, but mostly so that you can get pleasure out of your experience with pigs. Not only does our course include a comprehensive 135 page manual with full colour photos, but we offer a back-up service for all course participants to answer all those questions you forgot to ask, or new questions as you move from say weaners to breeding, or when the time for slaughter comes. Many of our attendees are now lifelong friends and regular customers for stock every year. We pride ourselves in not just offering a one day course, but a complete service. We have a whole variety of attendees from those who are just about to get their stock, to those who are making plans for their next house move, some who will not be able to fulfill their dream for a number of years to come, and some who just want to come and play with the pigs.
So what makes the courses different at Oaklands Pigs ?
We are one of the biggest smallholder setups for pigs having 50 outdoor sows from a dozen different breeds, which means we can show you what all the breeds are like, how big they grow and what their temperaments are like. And being all different ages you can actually see what size your fattened pigs are likely to be for a joint and sausage pig or a slightly bigger ham and bacon one, and also how big your weaners will be when you first buy them. We take you in with all our pigs, so you can touch and see them at close range.
We also have extensive breeding knowledge, which can be invaluable to those of you who might want to keep your own sow for breeding now or at a later date.
As we have 3-4 litters a month, there are always plenty of piglets of all ages to see, and we have even had litters born during a course. We are therefore able to discuss a whole miriad of breeding and weaning senarios, as we have encountered most things over the many years we have been doing this.
We realise too, that everyones setup is going to be different in terms of space and vegetation, so we have pigs in both woods and paddocks and a whole variety of types of ark (tin, wood, straw, plastic, DIY) so that we can show you lots of different ways of keeping your pigs and how to adapt our ideas to your own land. There is nothing better than to actually see all the fencing options and discuss types of ark so you can choose what would be best for you.
Lastly – our enthusiasm. We love to share our knowledge and enjoyment of pigs and we have deliberately set up our environment to show you as many options as we can. We want to ensure that your experience with pigs goes smoothly and becomes a lifelong hobby, even if you are not going for the full “Good Life”.
So if you want lots to see and touch and loads of ideas, then come and join us for a fun and informative day.
