Hampshire sow with new born litter
Next available date – Saturday 24th of July
A full day spent on the farm aimed at giving people the confidence to handle pigs and the opportunity to learn about successful ways of keeping pigs. This is a very practical course run by two experienced pig keepers, John Sutcliffe and Carole Barr, who both successfully breed pedigree pigs for the showfield and the butcher.
John’s Coal Yeat Herd of British Saddlebacks is one of the largest in the country containing 10 different female lines and 6 different boar lines. These traditional pigs are supplied weekly to local butchers.
Carole’s Ashghyll Herd of British Lops are the only traditional breed still on the endangered list with the Rare Breed Survival Trust. This old fashioned breed is complimented by Hampshires, a modern breed of pig, kept by a relatively small number of breeders in this country.
Set in the beautiful location of the Lake District this course is a fun, hands on pig keeping course for complete beginners and those wishing to expand their knowledge.
