Bill at Moons Green

| Featured Course Providers | 22 November, 2010

We are an unlikely trio at Moons Green – a Kentisk stockman, a New Zealand foodie and a Moonraker art director…and of course the irrepressible Crumble. Together we hold well structured training courses, specialising in keeping Outdoor Pigs, Free-range Poultry and Market Gardening.

Bill Mason is the marketing man. He grew up on a smallholding in Wiltshire, where his family kept outdoor pigs and free-range geese. For many years he abandoned rural life for the lights of London where he worked as a branding consultant and publishing consultant. The new millennium found him in Gothenburg where he has been photographing and packaging books for Swedish publishers. Check out his website, www.billmason.eu. Bill and his partner Ingrid will be feeding you on your visit to Moons Green.

Philip Ashton Cobb has been a market gardener and stockman for more than twenty years. He and his wife Trish have a wealth of knowledge and are locally renowned for their unsprayed, all-natural vegetables and fruit. Philip is an expert poultryman and has a natural affinity with animals. Philip will be your guide and instructor  on our Pigs and Poultry for Profit and Smallholding for Profit courses at Moons Green. Philip likes to talk and you can reach him on 01797 270327.

John Doig is a much-traveled Kiwi writer and cook who settled in Kent to educate his children after a lifetime in Asia, New York and France. He’s the food fanatic who has researched saucissons and air-dried hams and is now putting his knowledge to work.  Moons Green charcuterie is produced at our plant in nearby Bodiam. John is also a great maker of pies which we sell at local Fairs.

Long before the revival of interest in self-sufficiency, market gardening and eating natural produce, brought about by TV programmes from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Jamie and Jimmy, there has been a thriving smallholding at Moons Green in Kent in the South-East of England. We run several carefully structured training courses presented in a personable and friendly way by experienced staff.

‘Smallholding for Profit’ Day Course

Attendance at one of our unique Smallholding for Profit’ Training Course will involve you in the daily life of a small working farm. You will receive sound, practical advice which will help you develop the necessary skills, confidence and knowledge which are essential to operate your own self-sufficiency enterprise. We will teach you about basic livestock keeping (outdoor pigs, free-range chickens and geese) and cost-effective growing of natural fruit and vegetables.

‘Pigs and Poultry for Profit’ Day Course

The Pigs and Poultry for Profit course teaches you the basics of keeping pigs, hens and geese. Apart from the charm of rearing animals, there are many pitfalls which we will highlight and help you avoid. We focus on making money from your animals while treating them with respect and consideration.

‘Pigs for Profit’ Half-day Course

This course teaches you the basics of keeping free-range outdoor pigs.

‘Poultry for Profit’ Half-day Course

This course teaches you the basics of keeping free-range outdoor hens and geese.

Our Rare-breed Pigs

The difference in taste between supermarket pork and rare breed pork is astonishing and something our customers love. It’s a consequence of more than just breeding though: our pigs take almost twice as long to grow as the commercial varieties who are raised in concrete pens and never see the light of day. You are doing your part in preserving these wonderful pigs everytime you purchase a Moons Green product. At Moons Green, we breed British Saddlebacks and Gloucester Old Spots, both of which taste wonderful and carry less fat than other varieties.
